Truth be told, back when the good ol' USA was fat and sassy and the world economic power, we could afford employer based pension and health insurance plans. These could be structured to "endow" employees with coveted fringe benefits while bolstering a loyal work force. Never mind the economic inefficiency, nor the individual resources that were lost, nor the moral inequity of this to all the people left out. Now that America's financial hegemon is falling away the country persists in its old ways. The "free market" does not work and medical insurance does not dependably maximize health and is so inefficient that its tatters are now visible to everyone except the economic conservatives, the main stream media, and middle of the road politicians. The only solution for all citizens, for every business, and for the country is to totally eliminate private for profit health insurance companies.

Isn't it sad that The New Republic is opposing single payer? As a small opinion magazine its health insurance costs must be crushing. HR 676 would be a huge boost to them. It is heartbreaking to see how ideology wins out over basic moral values and self interest.

Right on! :-)

It is critical to debunk the "you can keep your current insurance if you like it" fiction of pseudo universal health care reform.
