The Health Care for All Illinois Act (HB 311) establishes a statewide single-payer health insurance plan to provide comprehensive health benefits to all Illinoisans equally.

Dr. Fegan, a past president of PNHP, is the associate chief medical officer for the Ambulatory and Community Health Network for the Cook County Bureau of Health Services. She is the coordinator of the Illinois PNHP chapter’s Speaker’s Bureau, and has lectured extensively to both medical and community audiences on health care reform in the U.S. and Canada. She is a co-author of “Universal Healthcare: What the United States Can Learn from Canada” (1999) and a contributor to “10 Reasons for National Health Care” (2008). The daughter of a labor union organizer and a social worker, Dr. Fegan received her undergraduate degree from Fisk University and M.D. from the University of Illinois College of Medicine

Dr. Young, an internist who recently retired from a decades-long practice in Chicago’s Hyde Park community, is national coordinator of PNHP. He is clinical professor of preventive medicine and community health at the University of Illinois Medical Center. Dr. Young graduated from Northwestern Medical School and did his residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. During the 1970s and early 1980s, he served as chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at Cook County, where he established the Department of Occupational Medicine. He has also been an American Medical Association member since 1952.
In addition to his distinguished career as a physician, Dr. Young has been a leader in public health policy and medical and social justice issues. In 1998, he had the distinction of serving as president of the American Public Health Association and in 1997 was inducted as a Master of the American College of Physicians.

Presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton presents us with yet another health-reform proposal based on the fatal strategy of keeping private insurance companies in the driver’s seat. Her proposal won’t cover the 47 million uninsured, or even guarantee that people who have coverage today will have it when they fall ill and are unable to work.

Eliminating private health insurance our only good option

Rod Blagojevich wants to be remembered as Illinois’ “health care governor,” and his focus on our state’s millions of uninsured and underinsured is commendable. Unfortunately, he has come up with the wrong prescription. Blagojevich would hike taxes to pay insurance companies for meager benefits. But eliminating private insurers altogether would save enough to provide health care for all Illinoisans for no more than we’re spending now.
