Bangor, ME — The Executive Board of the Maine State AFL-CIO has endorsed HR 676, single payer health care legislation introduced by Congressman John Conyers (D-MI). Maine is the 18th state AFL-CIO to endorse HR 676.
The Executive Board’s resolution, passed on May 16, was proposed by Peter Kellman, President of the Southern Maine Central Labor Council. The Executive Board sent a letter, on behalf of all the labor councils in Maine endorsing HR 676, to the state’s congressional delegation. The letter asked them to support HR 676 in the House and its equivalent in the Senate.
Four of five central labor councils in Maine have endorsed HR 676. The Maine Council of the United Steelworkers, made up of 22 USW locals, recently endorsed the Conyers bill and the Maine State Building & Construction Trades Council endorsed HR 676 last November.
Bruce Roy, President of the Maine Council of Steelworkers, who is a member of the State AFL-CIO Executive Board, said the AFL-CIO endorsement resolution passed unanimously and without discussion “because anyone here who doesn’t know about HR 676 has been living in a hole.”

HR 676 would institute a single payer health care system in the U.S. by expanding a greatly improved Medicare system to every resident.
HR 676 would cover every person in the U. S. for all necessary medical care including prescription drugs, hospital, surgical, outpatient services, primary and preventive care, emergency services, dental, mental health, home health, physical therapy, rehabilitation (including for substance abuse), vision care, chiropractic and long term care. HR 676 ends deductibles and co-payments. HR 676 would save billions annually by eliminating the high overhead and profits of the private health insurance industry and HMOs.
HR 676 currently has 70 co-sponsors in addition to Conyers. Co-sponsors and bill text are here:
