The problems in our health system are well known: Increased morbidity and mortality among patients without adequate coverage (not to mention financial ruin); three straight years of double-digit premium increases; Enron-like criminal fraud among several of the nation’s largest for-profit health firms (e.g. HealthSouth, Columbia/HCA, Tenet); and a continued rise in the number of uninsured and underinsured to 47 million.
We are heartened that the media is increasingly willing to do stories on “the problem,” but we are anxious to see and do more on “the solution” — that is, single payer national health insurance. Not tax credits — as proposed by some Democrats as well as Republican candidates for office. Not mandates to buy private insurance. Not more failed incremental measures – but true reform that will make our health system accessible and sustainable for the next generation.
