• Vote on single-payer amendment & House bill expected Saturday

  The latest news from Capital Hill is that there could be a vote on the Weiner amendment for single payer as soon as this Friday, although it may not come up until Saturday. The House is expected to vote on the Democrats' bill at 6 p.m. Saturday. The Kucinich amendment did not make it into the final bill, and is dead.

• 8 people are sitting-in the office of Sen. Lieberman!
  Mobilization for Health Care for All
  As we send this out 8 people are sitting-in the office of Sen. Joseph Lieberman demanding that he stop taking money from the insurance industry. The massive campaign donations and lobbying spending of the insurance industry is blocking real reform that would provide everyone in America with access to health care. When 45,000 people are dying annually due to lack of health care it is a moral imperative that America act now to provide health care to all. We are able to do this for senior citizens, why not for all Americans?

• It's Medicare's 44th Birthday!

  Today, single-payer supporters from all over the country are celebrating the 44th birthday of one of the nation's most popular public programs: Medicare. On this anniversary of Medicare, we are calling for an end to a wasteful private health financing model based on earning profits through the restriction and denial of needed health care.

• Action Alert: Support the single-payer amendment

  PNHP has learned that as early as this Friday or Monday (July 17 or 20), Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) will introduce, in the House Energy and Commerce Committee, an amendment to the so-called Tri-Committee health care bill. The amendment would replace the private health insurance industry with a single-payer national health insurance program.

• On Eve of Healthcare Rallies, Forums
  With action heating up in Washington for enactment of comprehensive healthcare reform, the nation's largest RN union and professional association joined with progressive Democratic Party activists today in calling for the most "robust" reform of all to repair the nation's healthcare crisis, by enacting a single-payer system in the form of expanded and updated Medicare for all.

• Gutting the Health Care Plan: The Scorpion and the Congress

  Will serious health reform meet the fate of the scorpion and the turtle? In that fable, the scorpion pleads with the turtle to carry him across a river. The turtle resists, fearing the scorpion's sting, but the scorpion reassures him that he'd do nothing so foolish, since both would drown if he did. Finally the turtle agrees. • Calling All Single Payer Supporters

  If you have not already heard, THIS FRIDAY - MAY 8 - there is a TON of action being planned around the country, online, and on the street to urge Congress to put single payer on the table - pass HR676, S703, et al. In light of the arrest this week of 8 activists including several doctors during the Senate Finance Committee's healthcare reform "Roundtable," this call to action is even more important.

• State legislators launch effort to push H.R. 676

  A group of state legislators has initiated a nationwide effort to publish an appeal to President Obama and members of the 111th Congress to support H.R. 676, single-payer health care legislation introduced in Congress by Rep. John Conyers Jr. and presently co-sponsored by 75 other House members.
