CHICAGO, IL — Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP), alongside Public Citizen, National Nurses United, People’s Action Institute, Social Security Works, Labor Campaign for Single Payer, and Healthcare NOW, joined a broad coalition of organizations in releasing an open letter urging policymakers, advocates, labor leaders, and grassroots organizers to unite behind Medicare for All as the centerpiece of a bold agenda for working people.

The letter, “Now is the Time for Medicare for All,” argues that rising medical debt and widespread frustration with corporate influence in health care demand Medicare for All; over 325 advocacy organizations have signed on.

“If we do not inspire, energize, and organize the largest grassroots movement in history, including the multiracial working class, everyday Americans, and everyone else hurt by our broken health care system, by demanding real material changes like Medicare for All, then we risk losing millions more people to the false promises of authoritarians and their corporate allies,” the letter states.

The coalition argues that Medicare for All is uniquely positioned to unite Americans around a simple and popular demand: guaranteed health care for everyone.

“Policymakers need to hear what physicians and patients already know: our healthcare system is failing. Americans are tired of watching insurance and pharmaceutical corporations siphon billions from patient care,” said Dr. Diljeet K. Singh, President of Physicians for a National Health Program. “We deserve healthcare that is high-quality, accessible, and free from prior authorizations, crushing deductibles, and medical debt. It’s time for Medicare for ALL.”

The letter rejects efforts to settle for proposals that preserve the role of private insurance companies while leaving millions vulnerable to medical debt, underinsurance, and barriers to care.

“We must dream bigger,” the letter states. “Americans believe the government should guarantee health care to everyone, and anything less means tens of millions of people in the U.S. continuing to suffer from the lack of necessary care and the prospect of medical debt if they do seek care.”

“For years, insurance lobbyists have sold politicians the myth that more bureaucracy and complex regulations will fix our healthcare system,” Dr. Singh said. “Americans know better. The billions currently wasted on insurance profits and administrative waste should be invested in patient care. We need clinics and hospitals where communities need them, not where corporations can maximize profits. We need Medicare for All.”

The letter points to growing public support for Medicare for All and increasing support in Congress, noting that more than half of House Democrats and a record number of senators have signed onto Medicare for All legislation.

“We urge members of Congress to stop listening to the political consultants and start listening to the people,“ the letter states. “Americans understand we must get corporate greed out of our health care system once and for all.”

“Americans will no longer accept being denied what people in so many other countries already have: guaranteed access to high-quality, trustworthy healthcare,” Dr. Singh said. “No prior authorizations. No copays. No deductibles. No medical debt. The American people are demanding Medicare for All.”

Physician leaders from PNHP are available for interviews to speak on the letter. Please contact PNHP Policy and Communications Specialist, Anika Thota at anika@pnhp.org for interview requests.
