Interview with Dr. Paris (December 9, 2023)
Interview with Dr. Singh (January 1, 2024)
PNHP past president Dr. Carol Paris and PNHP vice president Dr. Diljeet Singh discuss the issue of moral injury among physicians—and how it differs from the more commonly used term, “burnout”—on back-to-back episodes of the Prescription for Healthcare podcast.
Both physicians lament the fact that doctors are often not able to prescribe an ideal course of treatment because a for-profit insurance company denies it.
“The reality is that there are all these other entities hiding in the exam room,” says Dr. Paris. “The insurance company, the pharmaceutical company, the hospital, or the owner of the venture-capital owned practice that the physician is practicing in.”
Dr. Singh adds, “As long as there’s a third person in this system who’s just trying to make money, that’s going to disrupt the sense of trust and openness” that should exist between patients and their physicians.
